US Judge overrules Montana’s state ban on TikTok, here’s why
US federal judge issues preliminary injunction to block Montana's ban on Chinese short-video app TikTok, signed into law by Republican governor Greg Gianforte. The judge rules that the ban goes beyond the state's power and violates users' constitutional rights, echoing TikTok's claim that the law violates First Amendment rights. The legislation is deemed too broad and not narrowly tailored. Montana's state attorney's office is considering its next steps. TikTok has faced regulatory scrutiny globally and its CEO, Shou Zi Chew, has been questioned by a Congressional committee over data privacy concerns. The US government previously warned ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a possible ban.
