Apple has finally replaced the Lightning cable with USB-C on the iPhone, as requested by the European Union (EU), but the EU now wants Apple to open up its ecosystem to competitors. Under the Digital Markets Act, Apple is considered one of the EU's "gatekeepers" and must follow strict guidelines, including allowing users to remove pre-installed apps and replace them with third-party alternatives. Apple argues that its closed ecosystem maintains user security and privacy, but the EU commissioner believes that regulation can foster innovation while maintaining security and privacy. There are rumors that Apple may enable sideloading in future versions of iOS 17, but it may be limited to Europe to comply with regulations.
